Mike Stax of Ugly Things Magazine Reading and Q&A
June 24, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Please join Nuggets Night and Music Millennium as we welcome acclaimed author and performer Mike Stax of Ugly Things Magazine and garage rock legends The Loons. This is a free public book reading; all ages.
For over thirty years, Mike Stax has edited the respected music history magazine Ugly Things, and has written liner notes for countless ’60s music reissues.
Stax will be reading excerpts from his new book Swim Through the Darkness, and discussing his long journey writing and researching this book.
About Swim Through the Darkness:
Craig Smith was a 1960s golden boy – good looking, charismatic, outgoing; a preternaturally gifted musician and songwriter whose songs were recorded by some of the biggest names in entertainment – Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, the Monkees. Smith’s future success seemed assured, until an unexpected turn of events plunged him into a terrifying darkness. Clean-cut Craig Smith became Maitreya Kali, the self-proclaimed psychedelic Messiah. He laid out his poignant, disturbing schizophrenic vision on a sprawling self-released double-album before disappearing completely. Stax spent fifteen years piecing together the mystery of Maitreya Kali, uncovering one of the strangest and most tragic untold stories of the 1960s and ‘70s.
Copies of Swim Through the Darkness will be for sale and Stax will be signing.
